Photographs and information from E.Timoney, October 2009
This is the old Canal Lock in Cong. It was never used as a canal. The doors where never put on. Much later front wall added and used as a Handball alley. This added wall has since been demolished as it became
dangerous. Locals tell of Rob Foy beinga prominent handballer here many years ago.

that is not a handball alley
it a lock for water on the Cong dry canal between Lough Mask and Lough Corrib
"Anonymous" is correct > it's a lock on that canal.

I was given the impression that this old lock was used as a Handball Alley. On further investigation locals have told me that the Old Alley was located very close to the Lock, but that the Lock was not actually used as an alley. It seems that the old alley was not built very well and had become dangerous and demolished. Prominent players of the past were Rob Foy and Paddy Clarke. Enda Timoney.
I have it on authority of Michael Coyne (Ballinrobe) and Peter Carter (Killwalla) that handball was indeed played in a lock of the "dry canal" in Cong.
