Historical information provided by M. Carrie, March 2023.
Historical photograph is featured in article titled 'How idea of building an alley came about', and shows official opening of the alley in 1975 by a Brother Malone. Other men in photograph are Joe Joe Moloney, John O'Leary and Sean Ó Duibhir. In addition to an alley at the RIC Barracks,there was another unroofed alley on the site of the library between 1935 and 1960. The short histories describe those involved in building this alley, as well as the 1975 alley. The latter was built as a tribute to a local man – Monto Carrie. As his nephew describes;
Monto is an uncle of mine. He was killed in road traffic accident going to a juvenile GAA match in August 1973. He was coach of team due to play. He was 36 years old. He was chairman of the local GAA club and is generally credited with building the foundations of a great juvenile GAA club that reaped tremendous success in hurling and football through late 1960s and 1970s. Many of those players went on to represent Tipperary and won All Ireland honours at minor, under 21 and senior hurling. Monto also played a significant leadership role in healing a rift that devided the club into two separate entities in early 60s.
